Troubleshooting and repair

The domain expired and the site vanished, what to do

An expired domain

When the site and the email disappear in the same second and nothing has happened on the server, the cause is almost always the domain. It is rented for a fixed term, and the renewal invoice often goes to an address nobody reads any more. The situation is fixable, but it will not wait a month.

In short

  • The site and the email disappear together, that is the telltale sign.
  • An expired domain has a grace period whose length depends on the extension.
  • Act now. After the grace period the name can be released for anyone to register.

1. Confirm this is about the domain

If both the site and the email stopped at the same time while the hosting panel still opens normally, this is almost certainly the domain rather than the server. The same reasoning is covered in our guide on a website that will not load.

2. Check the expiry and the status

Domain details are public. They show the expiry date and whether the name has already moved into a holding state. Check who is listed as the holder at the same time, because only the holder can renew. Domain ownership is covered in our guide on what a domain is.

3. Renew immediately

Renewing is the fastest action and it restores everything. The length of the grace period depends on the extension, so check the exact deadline with your own registrar rather than assuming. Once the name is renewed, the site and the email come back on their own, though with a few hours of delay.

4. If you cannot renew

The usual obstacles are that a former employee is listed as the holder, that the name is held by another company, or that the registrar credentials are lost. These are solvable but they take time, so start now. Moving a domain to another registrar is covered in our guide on transferring a domain.

5. Wait for the name servers to update

After renewal the information spreads gradually. If the site does not open immediately, the cause is usually caching rather than a new fault. Name server settings are covered in our guide on changing name servers.

6. Prevent a repeat

Put the domain on automatic renewal and make sure the billing address is one that is read during the holidays too. Put the expiry date in the calendar with a reminder. A domain is a company's address, and losing it costs more than any other fault covered on this page.

What not to do

Do not register a nearly identical new domain in a hurry and move the site there. Old links, search results and email addresses keep pointing at the old name, and if somebody else registers it, they receive the messages sent there too.

If you would rather not do it yourself

We check the status and the deadline, handle the renewal or the transfer and bring the site and the email back. We finish by turning on automatic renewal so this does not repeat.
