What is DNS?

DNS is the address book of the internet. It tells browsers and mail servers which machine your domain points to.

  1. Domain A visitor types company.fi into the browser. The name is easy for people to remember, but the network cannot use it as it is.
  2. Name server The browser asks the domain name server where the name leads. The name server reads the answer from the DNS records.
  3. Server The answer is an IP address, and the browser fetches the site from that server. The whole chain usually takes milliseconds.

DNS records and what they do

A record is one line in your domain zone. Each type answers a different question.

Record What it does
A Points the domain to an IPv4 address. This is the record you change when a site moves from one server to another.
AAAA The same as an A record but for an IPv6 address. Newer networks prefer it.
CNAME Points a subdomain at another name. External services often ask for this when you start using them.
MX Tells the internet where mail for your domain is delivered. A wrong MX record means mail does not arrive.
TXT Free-form text, in practice most often SPF, DKIM and DMARC. They prove that mail really was sent from your domain.
NS Names the servers that answer for your domain. This is where control moves from one provider to another.

SRV, CAA and the other common record types are supported too. There is no limit on the number of records.

Name servers and the two families

This is the one place in your DNS settings where the wrong choice takes the domain down completely.

  • Nordweb has two name server families, and your domain zone always lives in only one of them. The wrong pair means the domain stops working entirely, so we do not list them here.
  • Which family is correct depends on whether your site is in our hosting. Your account picks it for you, so you do not have to know which one it is.

Frequently asked questions about DNS

On our name servers changes take effect almost immediately. Worldwide propagation depends on the TTL value of the record, which sets how long an answer is kept in caches. Changes are usually visible everywhere within a day, and faster with a shorter TTL.
Not directly. DNS management belongs to a domain registered with us or transferred to us. If you want your name on our name servers, transfer the domain to us or contact support and we will look at it together.
Most often when a service changes or a new one is taken into use. There are three typical situations: the domain is registered but there is no site yet, so the records wait ready. The domain is with us but the site runs on another provider server, so you point the A record there and still manage the name with us. Or you have several domains, in which case they all appear in the same view and you do not have to look for records in several places.
