Redirect a domain to another web address

Redirecting a domain to another address

Sometimes you want to direct one domain's traffic to another address. There are two ways to do this: Domain Alias and Domain Redirect.

Option 1, domain Alias

An alias domain shows the same site content at a different address. The user sees the alias domain's name in the browser's address bar.

Example Both yritys.fi and yritys.com show the same site.

Setup instructions

  1. Log in at panel.nordweb.fi
  2. Navigate to Websites → select your site
  3. Select Domains → Add domain → Alias

Option 2, domain Redirect

A redirect automatically directs the user to a new address, the browser's URL changes to the new address.

Example vanha-nimi.fi automatically directs the user to uusi-nimi.fi.

Setup instructions

  1. Log in at panel.nordweb.fi
  2. Navigate to Websites → select your site
  3. Select Advanced → Redirect → Add redirect

Which one should you choose?

  • Alias - When you want the same site to appear at several addresses
  • Redirect - When you want one official address and the others to direct to it (better for search engine optimization)

Note Domains containing special characters must be added in ASCII form (Punycode). E.g. ääkkönen.fixn--kknen-fraa0m.fi
