Transferring a domain from one registrar to another

Transferring a domain name to Nordweb is easy. All you need is the registrar transfer key (EPP code/auth code) from your current provider.

Transfer steps

1. Get the registrar transfer key log in to your current provider's control panel and find the domain name's registrar transfer key. It may also be called a transfer key, EPP code or auth code. If you cannot find it, contact your current provider, they are obliged to give it to you within five business days. The key is valid for 30 days. If you cannot get the key for a .fi domain, you can request it from Traficom.
2. Remove the transfer lock on international endings .com and other international endings use a transfer lock that is removed in your current provider's panel. Finnish .fi and .ax domains have no transfer lock, so the transfer key alone is enough.
3. Start the transfer go to nordweb.fi/domain-siirto and enter the domain name and the transfer key.
4. Choose the nameservers by default the transfer keeps the domain's current nameservers, so your website and email keep working without a break. You can also move DNS to us or enter your own nameservers.
5. Wait for completion with .fi and .ax domains the transfer happens immediately, because the transfer key acts as the authorisation and no separate confirmation message is sent. With international endings such as .com you receive a confirmation message by email and the transfer takes from a few hours to a few days.

Things to note

• An international ending such as .com cannot be transferred within 60 days of registration or of a previous transfer. This restriction does not apply to Finnish .fi and .ax domains
• The domain must be valid (not expired)
• The website and email work normally during the transfer when the nameservers are left as they are
• With international endings such as .com the transfer adds one year to the validity, and that year is charged at checkout. With Finnish .fi and .ax the expiry date stays unchanged and the transfer is free

A transfer does not change the nameservers by itself

Changing registrar and changing DNS are two different things. The transfer form keeps your current nameservers by default, so after the transfer the domain points to exactly the same nameservers as before and nothing breaks. If you choose Nordweb nameservers, DNS moves to us, and your website and email start working only once they have been moved to us or the records have been added in the control panel.

So a transfer does not move the website or the mailboxes themselves. If they are with the old provider and it shuts the service down after the transfer, they stop working even though the domain is with us. Nameservers are moved separately and we help with that.

A transfer does not change the domain holder

Changing provider moves the domain into our management, but the holder recorded in the registry stays the same. If the owner of the domain is meant to change, that is a separate operation and it needs a different key.

With .fi domains the two are easily confused, because both are casually called a transfer key. You get the registrar transfer key from your current provider. The authorisation key is created by Traficom and sent to the domain holder.
