The transfer key, officially the authorisation key, is a one-time code created by Traficom with which the holder of a domain authorises ownership to move to someone else. It is needed only for .fi and .ax domains.
The key does not change the service provider. If you are moving a domain to another service provider, you need a registrar transfer key, and that is a different code. Read the guide transferring a domain from one registrar to another.
Traficom creates the key and sends it by email to the address recorded in the registry as the holder's address. We do not see the key and we cannot choose its contents. This is deliberate: the key is proof that the message reached the right owner, and it would have no value if the registrar could read it.
So we can order the message on your behalf, but we cannot tell you the key on the phone and we cannot send it again.
Sign in to your account, open the domain page and choose to order the authorisation key. The key goes to the holder's email within a few minutes.
One order can be made every ten minutes. The limit exists because every order sends the holder an email.
One month from ordering. If the change does not happen in that time, order a new key. The old one stops working.
Check the spam folder first. If the message is not there, the reason is almost always that the holder's email address in the registry is out of date. It can be different from the address you sign in with. Contact support and we will check which address is in the registry.
The key is given to the party taking over the domain. They make a change request in their account and enter the key there. Read the guide changing the holder of a domain.
Ordering the key therefore does not yet change anything. It is permission for the change, not the change.
